We will list errors and typos as we find them in page number order.

Page(s) Correction
33, line 12

Sentence should read: "Extinctions were more frequent for populations with smaller initial population sizes, larger fluctuations in population size and shorter generation times."

62, Table 3.3

Values for Plants should read:

Plants
H
GST
Total
0.133
0.224
Gymnosperms
0.160
0.068
Monocotyledons
0.144
0.231
Dicotyledons
0.096
0.273

41 In PVA data set, Sex ratio (SR) should be 50, not 0.5
76, 77

Line 1 on page77 refers to the frequency of A1 as 0.1 and A2 as 0.9, referencing Table 4.3. However in Table 4.3 the frequencies are reversed: A1 with 0.9 and A2 with 0.1.

121

Crnokrak & Roff (1995) cited in Table 5.6 is missing from the references: Crnokrak, P & D.A. Roff. 1995. Dominance variance: associations with selection and fitness. Heredity 75, 530-540.

131

Box 6.1, last sentence, "virus stain" should read "virus strain"

184, Table 8.1

Bottleneck size for black-footed ferrets is 7

185, line 8

Average number of alleles was reduced from 12 to 3.75, not from 6.7 to 2.4.

230, line 13

Meta-analysis included 34 data sets and the average correlation between fitness and heterozygosity was 0.43

239

The table for heterozygosity for allotetraploids in Example 10.4 is formatted incorrectly. The correct format should be:

    Locus 1
    A1A1 A1A2 A2A2
  A1A1 p^2 0 pq
Locus 2 A1A2 0 0 0
  A2A2 pq 0 q^2

253

Practical exercise 2. Initial allele frequencies should be p = 0.1, q = 0.9

308

Exercise 12.5: the second F value should be 0.0625 instead of 0.625.

352

The recovery numbers for the California condors are for downlisting from endangered to threatened, not for de-listing the species.

366

The first species is actually Petrogale coensis rather than P. godmani and the last is P. penicillata rather than P. p. pencillata. Corresponding changes should be made on the figure.

367

Helianthus paradoxus should not be referred to as a recent hybrid between common species. While it has a hybrid origin, it is an ancient hybrid that is distinct from its progenitor species and is clearly deserving of species status.

390

Under 4, the text "Anthropogenic convergence - treat as distinct population" should be moved to (a) under 5.

398

DNA fingerprint heterozygosity for the domestic cat should be 44.0 and the caption for bottom figure should be "Coiled tail, abnormal acrosome"

408, line 21

black-footed rock wallaby, not black-striped

424, line 3

founders were identified as actually African X Asiatic hybrids, not African

425, Table 17.1

10 founders for Arabian oryx, 7 for black-footed ferrets, and 12 for Guam rails.

435, Example 17.2

Kinships for Thelma and Louise should be 5/16 (0.3125) not 9/32; and mean kinships for them should be 0.2656.

482

Caption for Fig. 19.5: (c) should be labeled (b) and visa versa; 5th line from the bottom, example of greater prairie chickens is in Box 10.2

486, line 8

Sentence should read: "Consequently, buffalo exhibit recurrent maternal gene flow between Chobe and more northerly populations."

489

End of first para: Figure 15.1, not box 15.1

495, line 11

Insert after sentence that ends with "....22 homozygotes.": "Similarly, gosling 4 possesses allele 2 at locus G yet allele 2 is not present in wither putative parent."

508

In the PVA data set, Sex ratio (SR) should be 50 not 0.5

Glossary

Additive variance: That proportion of the genetic variation for a quantitative character due to variation in the average effects of alleles.

Demographic variation:....For example, the last dusky seaside sparrows were, by chance, all males.

Dominance variance: That proportion of the quantitative genetic variation for a character due to the deviation of heterozygotes from the average effects of the two homozygotes.

Interaction variance: That proportion of the quantitative genetic variation for a quantitative character due to the deviation of genotypic effects from the average effects of the constituent loci. Synonymous with Epistatic variance.

Random (not Randomly) amplified polymorphic DNA... Similar change under RAPD.

After problem R.6, the table of relative fitnesses is the answer to R.7
